Have you ever paused as you packed your bag for aerial class and wondered, “What should I actually wear to feel comfortable—and safe—on the silks, Lyra, or bungee?” As summer slowly winds into fall, it’s the perfect time to refresh your aerial wardrobe and talk about why what we wear matters for confidence, comfort, and performance.
Why Your Aerial Outfit Matters
Unlike many sports, aerial arts ask a lot from your clothing. What you wear touches your skin, grips (or slides) on apparatus, and keeps you both protected and free to move! Here’s what I look for—and recommend for every student in every season:
- Coverage & Comfort: Aim for fitted but not restrictive clothing—think leggings or unitards. Longer leggings, covered mid-sections, and sometimes sleeves or socks can help prevent friction burns, especially during hot months when the silks can get extra grippy.
- Fabric Choice for Grip: Cotton blends (not slippery yoga pants!) offer more protection against equipment. CoolMax, bamboo, or athletic poly blend leggings are favorite go-tos for both breathability and coverage.
- No Zippers, Snaps, Studs or Sequence: Smooth, seam-free styles are safest to prevent catching on fabric or equipment. Leave jeans, grommets, and sharp all jewelry at home.
- Grip Socks or Bare Feet: Barefoot is best for most apparatus—unless your feet need a little TLC, in which case grip socks work well for warm-ups or non-rig exercises.
And, as always, remember that our studio requires all students to wear leggings, cover mid-sections, and remove or tape over all jewelry to prevent personal injury and equipment tears.
Spotlight: Fall Colors & Fun
If your current aerial clothes are feeling tired or faded, now is a great time to embrace this season’s colors: jewel tones, burgundy, forest green, deep teal, or anything that makes you feel strong and expressive. Part of the joy of aerial is celebrating authenticity—so whether you love classic black or want to sparkle in metallics, choose what makes you excited to move!

Pro Tips for Parents & New Students: Wear a leotard with leggings or a unitard, and always make sure to wash new outfits before class (especially shiny fabrics). And always pack a water bottle!
Staying comfortable in aerial class is about so much more than style—it’s about supporting your movement and celebrating each milestone, big or small. If you have favorite athletic wear brands or outfit hacks, I’d love to hear them next time you’re in!
Wishing you a strong, safe, and colorful season above the ground.
With excitement for fall,
Ms. Peggy
